Imagine finding the expected in a most unexpected place. While searching for a photogenic waterfalls, I was blaming my poor luck after finding one that was not accessible. That changed on my return trip.
Near Cashiers, N.C., a graveled pull-off only has room for a couple of vehicles. A small Forest Service sign marks the path to Silver Run Falls. After a hike of only 100 yards or so, I found a classic waterfalls: About 30 feet in height, full flow, no obstructions. And to top it off, there was a rock strategically placed for anyone wanting to stay for a while.
